Description

This presentation is a collaboration between Ivy Rehab Network and Hospital for Special Surgery’s pelvic floor and orthopedic specialists. The program focuses on the essential elements of a comprehensive orthopedic lumbar and hip evaluation that includes the critical role of the pelvic floor. To demystify the role of the pelvic floor, this course will provide learners with a review of the anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor as it relates to lumbar and hip pathology. Discussion and integration of an external-only pelvic floor assessment will be addressed to assist clinicians in seamless integration during the evaluation process Education level: beginner

Learning Objectives

HSS Professional Education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Describe important anatomical and physiological considerations of the pelvic floor.
  • Describe and perform pelvic floor muscle evaluation without internal or Surface Electromyography (SEMG) systems.
  • List indications, precautions, and contraindications for pelvic floor examination.
  • Differentiate when to refer to pelvic floor specialists.
  • Identify specific hip and lumbar conditions that are closely related to the function of the pelvic floor.
