Diabetes in Children and Adolescents (Hybrid Course)

Diabetes rates are on the rise among U.S. children and adolescents, as the obesity epidemic continues among our youth. rehab providers can play crucial roles in the fight against diabetes negative effects on young people. This course presents current information about iabetes in children and youth. We review the impact of diabetes, examine the epidemiology of childhood obesity and diabetes, review complications and treatment guidelines, and discuss rehab approaches to intervention, focused on patient/family education, healthy eating, and exercise. We also present relevant current literature and discuss how that research may apply to our practices. An assortment of case studies allows us to apply the principles discussed throughout the course, while Therapist Tips and Supplemental Reading suggestions enrich the material. This course provides rehab professionals with an up-to-date appreciation of how our interventions may positively impact children and youth with diabetes in order to increase their daily participation and functional abilities, improve their quality of life, and give them a better long-term health prognosis. Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

Catherine Lewan, PT, DPT

Increasing numbers of Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19) survivors of all ages are reporting chronic or "long-haul" symptoms that require skilled rehabilitation to restore function and quality of life. Some studies indicate that 87% will have at least one lingering symptom at 2 months post virus, even if acute symptoms of the coronavirus were mild. The most reported long-term symptoms have the potential to thwart rehab efforts unless properly addressed:fatigue, dyspnea, tachycardia, exercise intolerance, "brain fog"/cognitive effects, sleep disturbances, cough, and chronic pain. These persisting phenomena are often seen in patients with chronic syndromes. Corresponding neuro-immune physiological adaptations are well-documented to heighten sensitivity of mechanisms intended to protect in times of distress, eventually outlasting their usefulness. This intermediate level workshop will review evolving research onPost-COVID-19 Syndrome, as well as more established data on similar chronic symptoms and pertinent neuro-immune physiology. Potential treatment options and case studies will be explored to facilitate participants’ confidence in identification and management of post-COVID-19 sequelae.Highlights Recognize your client/patient’s symptoms as post-COVID-19 sequelae and modify assessment and treatment techniques to improve outcomes Immediately implement treatment techniques for Post- COVID-19 Syndrome to improve functional capacity and quality of life
