Strength Training in Geriatric Rehabilitation

Strength Training in Geriatric Rehabilitation

Paul Frizelle PT DPT, MS, OCS, MTC, AIB-VR, CSCS, PES, CES

Sarcopenia (muscular atrophy related to aging and sedentary lifestyle) is one of the most common geriatric syndromes compromising the function of up to 40% of the aging population. Sarcopenia contributes to decreased gait speed, reduced grip strength, increased fall risk, and functional decline. This muscular dysfunction is best treated through the prescription of progressive resistance exercise. The individuals best positioned in the health care system to treat this health issue are rehabilitation professionals, especially those who are encountering these individuals while managing injury, illness, or long-term declines in function. This webinar will improve your understanding of how to prescribe strength training for the geriatric patient. Participants will learn how to immediately apply these strategies to improve functional tasks like stair negotiation, walking endurance, bed mobility, and transfers. Differences in types of strength prescription and types of strength exercises will be defined to help understand the application in rehabilitation. Attendees will be able to immediately take this information and apply it in their existing rehabilitation programs to improve the outcomes for their patients.Highlights Accurately prescribe strength training for your geriatric patients Functional exercise for strength vs. exercise to build strength levels

Katie O'Shea, PT, DPT, MBA, GCS, CDP, CCRP

Extensive studies have shown the benefit and impact of trust in the client-patient relationship. However, rapport goes a long way with other members of the care and management teams. Such attention is given during our academic years to all we need to know clinically, that sometimes the people connection skills are missed or assumed to develop once in clinical practice. Without the ability to connect with patients, coworkers, or management; therapists can find themselves frustrated, feeling disconnected, and limited in their career advancement options. This course will provide an overview of what rapport is and is not, and how this impacts communication. Participants will learn strategies that can be immediately applied to their interactions as well as building rapport in strained relationships.Highlights Learn 5 practical and easy strategies that can be implemented immediately to improve communication with patients, peers, and supervisors Improve your understanding of the emotional roadblocks faced by patients and develop effective strategies to progress your plan of care

Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

Catherine Lewan, PT, DPT

Increasing numbers of Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19) survivors of all ages are reporting chronic or "long-haul" symptoms that require skilled rehabilitation to restore function and quality of life. Some studies indicate that 87% will have at least one lingering symptom at 2 months post virus, even if acute symptoms of the coronavirus were mild. The most reported long-term symptoms have the potential to thwart rehab efforts unless properly addressed:fatigue, dyspnea, tachycardia, exercise intolerance, "brain fog"/cognitive effects, sleep disturbances, cough, and chronic pain. These persisting phenomena are often seen in patients with chronic syndromes. Corresponding neuro-immune physiological adaptations are well-documented to heighten sensitivity of mechanisms intended to protect in times of distress, eventually outlasting their usefulness. This intermediate level workshop will review evolving research onPost-COVID-19 Syndrome, as well as more established data on similar chronic symptoms and pertinent neuro-immune physiology. Potential treatment options and case studies will be explored to facilitate participants’ confidence in identification and management of post-COVID-19 sequelae.Highlights Recognize your client/patient’s symptoms as post-COVID-19 sequelae and modify assessment and treatment techniques to improve outcomes Immediately implement treatment techniques for Post- COVID-19 Syndrome to improve functional capacity and quality of life
